Our Full Story - The Other People Experiment

Knoel C. Honn

5/12/2026

The band formed initially in 1985 with Knoel Honn and Philip Johnson. 2 years later in 1987 Troy DeGarmo joined with the duo. Through the late 80's and into the early 90's the band morphed from a jam band originally called "The Unknown" to "Revolver" and in 1991 "The Other People." The band went through several lineup changes through the years with Knoel, Troy and Phil always at the core. The original lineup also included vocalist Scott E. and Drummer George B. Eventually Troy stepped away for about 6 months and Knoel took on a role role primarily of song writing, production and occasional playing on recordings in their studio. At this point a friend name Jay was brought in briefly on bass. Scott left the band on vocals. Jay left as well. Resulting in the lineup of Knoel on bass guitar, Troy on lead guitar, Phil on rhythm guitar and George on Drums. Vocal duties were shared between Troy, Phil and Knoel. Eventually George left to join another band. At this point the group became more of an experimental recording project involving Knoel, Troy and Phil along with whatever other people they brought in to the studio to record with. Over time recording became less frequent between all 3 of them. During the period between 1997 to 2010 Most of the recording was collaborative between Knoel and Troy. Although Knoel and Phil did work on a handful of songs and record a couple of live jams between the two. In June of 2010 Knoel and Troy began plans to rework and release the backlog of songs and recordings. Plans were also being made to do new songs with Troy, Phil and Knoel. Sadly in late August 2010 at the age of 37 Troy DeGarmo passed away from an undiagnosed heart condition. Plans were put on hold but Knoel continued to push ahead working on the back catalog and continuing to write new music. Periodically Knoel and Phil would work on the project together. In 2020 plans were moving ahead finally to begin reworking recordings and releasing the backlog of songs online then COVID-19 hit and disrupted plans. Finally in early 2023 Knoel and Phil began moving forward with reworking 40 plus years of music for release. Then sadly and unexpectedly in July of 2023 at the age of 51 Philip Johnson passed away in his home. After numerous attempts Knoel finally managed to begin releasing the bands back catalog of over 40 years of songs with the help of his son, friends and other family members. Many of the tracks were demos that Honn's new crew had to rework and / or finish. Over the years often in collaboration with Troy or Philip, Knoel continued writing new music and recorded demos. In this new era Knoel has leaned on the help of both of his brothers Seth and Jesse. Both Seth and Jesse are musicians. All three brothers have recorded and worked on music together since 1996. Honn's legacy also has moved forward involving both of his sons Caleb and Christian as well as both grandsons Charles and Stanley. This new era of music is finally being released primarily thanks to co-producer Christian Nelms. Knoel Honn has had Rheumatoid Arthritis and other health issues for many years but is able to continue writing new songs and with the help of "Other People" recording and releasing the music of The Other People Experiment. Honn hope one day the project will outlive him and continue with the legacy lineup involving his sons and grandsons. Sadly neither Troy DeGarmo nor Phil Johnson had any children or remaining family to be involved in the project moving forward.
